Snuffbox. Boxwood. Century XVIII.
Box or snuff box made of carved boxwood and metal worked to have the shape of a ship, with the lower part decorated with garlands and the front with three rows of cannons; note the work present in what would be the aft gallery. In the upper part, there are two lids attached to the box by means of hinges and decorated with figurative carvings: in one, a winged, naked figure is presented, playing a harp in a natural landscape; in the other, on a composition of vegetal elements, another winged figure holds a garland of leaves on a character who is dressed and standing next to him. The provenance of both from classical mythology is clear: the first could be Cupid; the second would be a Victory highlighting someone with that laurel wreath. Compare, for example, the piece dated around 1712 in the Hermitage Museum which, according to experts, reproduces the exterior of the Poltava ship.
