It is the sentimental tale of a crusty but endearing career soldier (Wayne) facing retirement in a world where the cavalry stands as the only defense against the combined might of the Indian nations. Wayne's performance embodies the subtlety and sensitivity that many claimed was beyond the actor's capability. How wrong they were. The film has often been compared to Frederic Remington's classic paintings of the west in general and of cavalrymen and Indians in particular.
