Description

Brass Signal Cannon! Muzzle loading black powder type cannon. Revolutionary war period and East India Company swivel type and signal cannon. We finally got the new tubes in! This is a copy of a piece we got some years back now and have been making and selling as a reproduction and re-enactor piece. It is copied from a Revolutionary War period George Rex cannon of the 1750-1790 period as far as has been determined. I did make a change with this run of tubes and in addition to the George Rex crest, now have an East India Co. crest as well. So all you pirate people out there, here's another piece for your collection! The EIC! The East India Trading Company also known as the Honorable John Co.! See the pictures posted of the Crests, these may vary from tube to tube but will give the general idea, same with the tubes themselves. All tubes will vary slightly in appearance due to molding differences at casting and from rough finishing.
These type tubes historically had a broad use over a long period of time. They were used as signaling pieces, grapnel throwers and even for fighting. The tubes we offer are based on a swivel gun design and are approximately 75 pounds of vertically poured cast brass just as they were done historically and lathe bored to a smooth bore finish and rough polished to remove most of the exterior sand cast finish and residue. The brass tube has a full breech with cascabel, cast in vent trough, reinforce rings and muzzle with cast in trunions. The tube is made from a quality brass that will age nicely and patina well or be polished to a gleaming shine and displayed. They are bored to roughly the size of a golf ball so, 1-5/8". Trunions are 9-1/2" across the back of the tube and approximately 1-1/2" in diameter. The tube itself is roughly 26-27 inches long and balanced to be breech heavy. The vent trough is cast in to the breech top but the vent is not drilled. This is sold as a nonfunctional piece and we do not drill the vent, though many people have, to allow it to be used as an impressive and very loud noise making signal piece. Traditionally the vent trough was drilled at the forward end down into the breech chamber to allow for a powder prime. That was followed by a fuse and also a breech lock mechanism on later guns. These tubes can be mounted in a naval type or field carriage as shown in customer pictures, even on a ship or boat. They have been used by re-enactors, historic revolutionary period forts as display pieces and history buffs that want something extraordinary. Now you can get one for yourself. For those interested, there is a guy here on eBay that I can refer you to for a naval carriage like the one pictured in the shots above. You will need to look around for the galloper style field carriage like the one used by the NY Regiment though I may be able to direct you to wagon wheels for making your own.
