This is a one-of-a-kind, early, and unusual handmade small Folk Art toy cannon, circa mid 1800’s. The cannon barrel is actually a cut off 5 3/8” rifle barrel end that is ¾” square and is tapered to a ¾” round shape near the muzzle with a 3/8” bore and an added touch hole in the top. The barrel has a countersunk hole in the top fitted with a 4” bolt that secures the barrel to the block of wood with a large countersunk screw on the bottom. There is untouched debris in the interior end of the barrel. The 3” x 3” x 7 3/8” block of wood tapers slightly at the top towards the rear and has its original dark green paint and a stable thin hairline crack to the top right edge. The front 6 spoke wheels are 1 3/4” diameter x 3/16” thick cast Iron, held in place with 2 handmade Iron nails that act as the axels. The underneath rear wheel is interesting as the small roller wheel is encased in an Iron mount with side protrusions for the wheel axel mounted on an Iron plate that is secured with 2 handmade nails in a counter sunk hole at the rear. Thus, the cannon was designed to recoil after firing depending upon the amount of black powder charge and subsequent large black cloud of smoke and loud bang. This piece is heavy for its size at 2 pounds 7.9 ounces or 1124 grams. Note this large block of wood has naturally occurring shrinkage over time of about an 1/8”. As a result, the rifle barrel can be rotated slightly about 10 percent to the left, and about 35 percent to the right. Of course, the barrel is designed to be straight when fired so that the cannon recoils backward in a straight line. The front wheels have a small domed shaped axel mount on the inside and both have a small nick to one side that appears to be part of both wheel castings and has no bearing on their functionality. The wood block shrinkage has created a small 1/8” gap for the front Iron wheels that now results in the outside nail heads extending about 1/8” beyond the wheels, making the wheels a little loose and the left wheel looks wobbly. In my opinion, the nails could simply be pounded in another 1/8” to tighten and align the wheels a little more vertical if desired. However, the wood shrinkage is natural, and the resultant wheel positions show genuine age and have been left in untouched condition. It is hard to accurately date this piece, but the antique gun barrel and folk-art style suggest this piece dates to the mid 1800’s, possibly earlier.
This handmade cannon has a classic Folk Art look, and would fit into any cannon, black powder, signal canon, toy cannon, 1800s toy, Folk Art, Man Cave, Den, Office or conversation piece.
